Prof. K. A. Isaac Commemoration Lecture 2014: A Report

Kerala Library Association organized the 9th Prof K A Isaac Commemoration Lecture 2014, at DLIS Hall, Thiruvananthapuram, on 17 October 2014, in a befitting manner. Mrs Chechamma Isaac & son, Prof Kurien Isaac were present on the occasion. KLA’s new publication, “New Information Technology Interfaces in Libraries & Information Centres” was also released by Prof (Dr) Ramesha of Bangalore University during the function. The book was received by Dr T.M.Vasudevan, Head, DLIS, University of Calicut.

Dr M Lalitha, General Secretary, KLA, welcomed the gathering. In his presidential speech, Dr A Gopikuttan, President, KLA, briefly touched upon the significance of the function.

Prof Ramesha started the lecture entitled “Google Generation” by paying a  glowing tribute to Prof Isaac., explaining the latter’s relevance in the google generation and his contributions to the library field by way of textbook literature. In the course of his talk, Prof Ramesha traced the history of Google. He showed how much it has started influencing the new generation and how the Google generation is different from other generations and also its impact on library & information science.

Through his powerful powerpoint presentation, Prof Ramesha could establish that it is very essential to redefine library services, sources, environment and infrastructure to meet the changing needs of a generation which is over-reliant on Google. Librarians of the 21st century have to find out about user behavior and preferences and make their library experience more rewarding. For this, library professionals have to explore, understand and then make use of the infinite possibilities of Google’s multiple resources like Google Scholar, Google pedia, Skillpages & Google sites. Prof Ramesha concluded his lecture by saying that libraries and librarians will always be there in spite of changes and challenges and success of librarianship as an evolving profession depends on how professional skills are improved, positive ethics and good attitude are either imbibed or cultivated and how effectively training is imparted.

Sri N Sukumaran Nair, former State Librarian, Kerala, had many a vivid memory of Prof Isaac to share with the audience. The various facets of Prof Isaac as a professional, teacher and administrator were brought to life by his vivid portrayal and narration of many anecdotes. It was a fitting tribute paid to a great soul by his former colleague and associate.

This was followed by the release of the book, “New Information Technology Interfaces in Libraries & Information Centres” by Prof (Dr) Ramesha. The first copy was received by Dr T.M.Vasudevan, who also introduced the book , which is a seminar volume, to the audience.

Dr K. P. Vijayakumar, Head, DLIS, University of Kerala, offered felicitations and Sri G.S. Harikumar, Vice President, KLA, proposed vote of thanks.
