One Day Workshop on D-Space Digital Library, 19 Jan. 2013, KUFOS, Kochi

KLA Ernakulam Region & the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), jointly organizing a One Day Workshop on DSpace Digital Library on 19th January 2013 at the KUFOS Campus, Panangad, Kochi.

About the Workshop

Digital Libraries play a key role in modern Information Management. Institutional repositories (IR) have now emerged as main focal points in this regard. IR’s are rich sources of information which can store a wide variety of documents. Institutional Repository is a subset of a Digital Library which preserves and showcase the intellectual output of an organization. Developing a Digital Library is not an easy task. Organized planning, training and team work are essential.

Number of Digital Library software are available as Open Source and as  in Proprietary  formats. DSpace is a groundbreaking Open Digital Library system which can capture, store, index, preserve and redistributes all scholarly research materials in digital formats.

The Workshop is conceived as a basic orientation programme through a comprehensive demonstration of DSpace Digital Library Software.

Objectives

  • To give awareness about Digitization, Digital Libraries and Institutional Repositories
  • To introduce and give basic know how on the installation and working of DSpace Digital Library Software and the process of developing institutional repositories.

Who should participate

The Workshop is primarily intended for Library and Information Science Professionals, Researchers and LIS Students. Maximum intake is 40.

How to reach KUFOS Head Quarters

The KUFOS Head Quarters is located on the side of NH 47 Bye-pass at Madavana junction near Panangad, which is on the way to Cherthala from Vyttila junction.

By Train: From the Ernakulam South / North railway station, buses run to Cherthala, Panangad, Kumbalam, Aroor, Eramalloor and Alappuzha via Madavana Junction. ( Distance from Ernakulam South Railway Station: 12 km.)

By Bus: From the Northern part of Kerala, Kottayam and Idukki, first reach at Vyttila Hub and then catch the above mentioned buses. (Distance from Vyttila junction : 6 km.)

From the Southern part of Kerala, first reach Aroor, then take deviation towards Vyttila. (Distance from Aroor Junction: 5 km.)

9:00AM – 9:30AM: Registration

9.30 AM-10.00 AM  : Inauguration

10:00AM – 11:30AM: Introduction to Digitization and Digital Libraries

11:30AM – 11:45AM: Tea Break

11:45AM – 1:15PM: Demonstration on DSpace

1:15PM – 1:45PM: Working Lunch

1:45PM-3:00 PM: Demonstration on DSpace

3:30PM – 3:45 PM: Tea Break

3:45 PM – 4.30 PM: Concluding Session

Resource Person: Experts on the software from Computer and Library Science Departments.

Registration

Registration is limited to 40 participants on first come first served basis. Registration fee: Rs 100/- The participants will be provided with a working lunch, refreshments and essential course materials.
